Our Identity

Our Congregation was established on December 8, 1854, under the name Congregation of Our Lady of Seven Dolours. The Servite characteristics were adopted through the affiliation of the sisters with the Order of Servants of Mary on July 11, 1865. On September 18, 1927, the Congregation was officially affiliated with the Order of Servants of Mary, becoming known as the Congregation of Our Lady of Seven Dolours, Servants of Mary, with the addition of O.S.M. to our names.

Our Congregation, by its very nature, is apostolic and was elevated to Pontifical status on March 5, 1957. In 1975, the name was changed from 'Congregation of Our Lady of Seven Dolours' to 'Congregation of Mother of Sorrows' due to the misunderstanding of the word 'Dolours' as a reference to American currency. As a result, we are now recognised as the 'Congregation of Mother of Sorrows Servants of Mary.'

This historical evolution has shaped our identity and mission, guiding us in our commitment to serving others and spreading the message of faith and compassion.
